‘When are we going to fight the Jews?’ the Sudanese soldier-boy asked.

Jahandar did not take his eyes off the sky. He watched another wave of Israeli Paratroopers float down to the ground.

‘When?’ the boy insisted.

Jahandar looked angrily at the boy. He picked up his AK-47 and threw it down in front of him. ‘Go!’

The boy looked back at him, stunned.

‘You can go if you want... and die.’

‘What will you do?’

‘I am leaving. I am going to report on what I have seen here.’

‘But...’

‘One more dead soldier will not defeat the Israelis. If you want to do some good, come with me and report on what you have seen.’

‘But my comrades.’

‘Are all dead.’

‘My commander will think I am a coward.’

‘You will be under my personal protection.’

The boy was wavering, Jahandar could tell. Before he had a chance to make up his mind, Jahandar grabbed the kid by the scruff and pulled him. ‘Let’s go.’
